Sonic The Hedgehog Toys

In the Sonic the hedgehog games on the wii, is Shadow meant to be Sonic’s nemesis ? I think he looks so cool in black.

I guess that I should mention this is on the collection of games for the PS2. Also, the problem that I have is the spinning barrel thing won’t let me get down below it. I think it is on Act 2. I only want to use Sonic and/or Tails, not Knuckles.
